; Sp. Pl. [Linnaeus] 1: 211 (1753)
Distribution: ca. 450 spp. arid and subarid regions of the Old World, centered in southern and eastern Africa, few Canary Isl., Madagascar (ca. 30), trop. and subtrop. Asia from Arabian Peninsula to New Guinea, Australia (Queensland). The inclusion of Brachystelma is accepted by Kubitzki (vol. 15, 2019), but disputed by many authors based on morphological reasons. The concept of Bruyns (2017) to include all Stapeliinae genera in a monophyletic Ceropegia sensu latissimo has not been accepted by subsequent authors.
