Distribution: Tropical and warm-temp. regions, mostly tropical America (> 400); tropical Africa (ca. 160), tropical Asia (> 150), few Middle and temperate East Asia. After a new lectotype was agreed upon, several paleotropical genera were reinstated (see there) (Simoes et al. 2024). The genus still remains highly polyphyletic. Monograph for Ipomoea (s. str.) of the New World: Wood et al. (2020).
