; Sp. Pl. [Linnaeus] 1: 38 (1753) s. l.
Distribution: temperate Northern Hemisphere. There is considerable disagreement over splitting or lumping Iris s. l. Splitting would create a lot (> 20) of morphologically almost inseparable smaller genera, lumping would require only to integrate Belamcanda and Hermodactylus. Therefore lumping is preferred here.
