Distribution: Cosmopolitan, but mainly Mediterranean and arid areas of the Northern Hemisphere. There are numerous local endemic apomicts with very small populations. Because they are apomicts, the often used category subspecies does not make sense (like in other apomictic genera). The status of many microspecies is disputed - for example Strid (2024) synonymized many of them for Greece.
