Distribution: ca. 250 major species and species aggregates cosmopolitan, but chiefly Northern Hemisphere (ca. 200 North America, 150 China). In Europe 1000s of apomictic microspecies exist, of whom only a minor part has been described. Dalibarda is a basal subgenus according to Huang et al. (2023). There are very many (> 3000) names described by Sudre in France with uncertain status. Recent authorities (D. P. Mercier, Belhacène et al.) think that most of them warrant recognition as full species, boosting the number in France to over 2000. To keep the number of listed synonyms down, isonyms are usually not listed throughout the genus.
