Distribution: Temperate and subtropical Northern Hemisphere, especially Mexico (over 150), China (over 150), and Mediterranean, montane areas of tropics, Peru (1). The genus is very polyphyletic, and many other genera are embedded in it. Messerschmid et al. (2020) recommend to expand it to encompass all genera of the Tribus Sedeae (equivalent to Leucosceptrum and Acre clades)
