Distribution: Pantropical, but mostly Old World: over 650 in New Guinea, other centers in Malesia (Borneo 288) and Madagascar, fewer than 100 in tropical America and tropical Africa each. The genus is taken here in a very broad sense, following Vermeulen et al. (2014). All attempts to split it have been unsuccessful so far.
