Distribution: Probably > 2000 spp. tropical and subtropical America from S-USA to Argentina, with a major center in the Andes foothills from Colombia to Peru and secondary centers in Mexico and Costa Rica / Panama. Many undescribed species remain even after the extensive efforts of Hágsater et al. The listed distribution for many older names might be too extensive because of the many newly separated species.
