093.0000 Family Magnoliaceae Juss.; Gen. Pl. [Jussieu] 280 (1789), nom. cons.
2(-17) genera, ca. 370 spp.
Species listed in database: 366; hybrids: 10
= Liriodendraceae F.A.Barkley; Phytologia 32: 304 (1975)
093.1001 Genus Magnolia L.; Sp. Pl. [Linnaeus] 1: 535 (1753)
Distribution: China (almost 200), tropical Asia, E-USA to tropical South America, but not in Africa. It remains controversial whether Magnolia should be treated sensu lato by inclusion of all split genera. The latest phylogeny of Wang et al. (2020) recognizes 15 sections and keeps everything together, but some authors continue to describe species in the split genera. The genus is severely over-split, and many recently described microspecies will turn out to be only forms or varieties.
