Distribution: Mediterranean and tropical Africa to South Africa and Asia Minor, some to central Europe, Macaronesia, Asia Minor and S-Himalaya, 1 E-Asia. There is considerable dispute which genera should be spun off (Speta established a microgenera system). Especially Chionodoxa is often kept separate. Several species remaining in tropical Africa belong most likely to other genera.
