Distribution: Temp. regions and montane areas of the Northern Hemisphere (esp. China, ca. 80), Africa (38), Madagascar (1). The genus is highly polyphyletic, which can only be resolved by including all surrounding genera including Gentianella (!). This would require massive recombination, which is not available yet.
